Mr S. Moore

On November 17th 2003, schools.ik.com announced the winners of the 2003-2004 Annual Golden Owl Awards for the best school websites created using the schools internet kit.
The awards ceremony took place at the BT Tower in London as part of the BT Education Programme Launch Event. This year ik.com in partnership with BT presented awards to a total of six schools.
The Golden Owl Awards reward the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the winning schools, which have used the Schools Internet Kit to produce attractive, useful and practical websites. The winning schools were chosen from a record number of 130 nominations put forward by users and members of the schools that use the free schools.ik.com service

Four schools, Academy Primary School from County Down, Hurst Park Primary School from Surrey, Lent Rise Combined School from Buckinghamshire and St Mary's Catholic Primary School from Swindon were judged Finalists. Each Finalist received prizes including a digital stills camera and software.

Second place went to Wallace Road Nursery School in Northampton who received prizes including a DVD player and software.

The overall winner, Shirenewton Primary School in Monmouthshire received the top award of Best School Website along with prizes including a PC, monitor and software.

The winners, who travelled from all over the UK, were presented with their awards by David Hancock, Programme manager of British Telecom's Social Policy Initiative and
Les Gray, Managing Director of ik.com Ltd.

Judges decided on the winning sites after carefully studying each of the nominations, looking closely at areas such as the structure of the site content and how certain features such as the guestbook, news and calendar had been utilised. The regularity of site updates also played a key role in helping identify the winners.
schools.ik.com in partnership with the BT Volunteer Scheme, offer this unique website service to schools. It enables teachers and pupils alike to create and maintain school or class websites with the minimum of effort and technical knowledge. This allows them time to concentrate on the look and content of their site.

The service is provided free to educational organisations as part of ik.com's commitment to education and life long learning and currently supports over 5,000 school users.
