About Our School

Academy Primary School is a controlled, co-educational day school. The school is situated on Listooder Road on a pleasant site. It was opened in 1976 to replace the old Saintfield Academy and four rural schools in a re-organisation programme of primary education in the area. The school serves the town of Saintfield and the surrounding country area, the children from outlying districts being transported to school by school bus. The present enrolment of compulsory school age children is 379 (at 1.9.2006) plus 49 in the Nursery. Staff includes the principal, fourteen class teachers ( including two job share posts )and two teachers on the Learning Support Team.
The well kept accommodation comprises twelve classrooms in the main school and two mobiles. There are also four work-areas, a computer suite/Library, an assembly / physical education / dining hall, meals kitchen, staff room, office accommodation and medical room with playgrounds, hard porous pitch and grass areas for games.

Our new extension was completed in September 2000 and contains three modern fully equipped classrooms for two Primary One classes and one Primary Two class. The extension also provides a large work-area, storage facilities and a disabled toilet. The school has also built a new Special Needs Suite to enable us to provide the best level of support for all our pupils. We are undertaking a rolling programme of equipping classes with interactive whiteboards and seven rooms are so equipped as of 1.09.05.

Our new Nursery Unit opened in September 2002 with an initial enrolment of 26 part-time places.Since September 2003 the Nursery Unit offers 52 part-time places, 26 for a morning session and 26 for an afternoon session.
